i Photorespiration

Photorespiration is the process of recycling phosphoglycolate, the primary project of the oxygenase activity of Rubisco. The reaction cascade is essential for plants, although energy is consumed and fixed carbon and nitrogen are lost. We are interested in the plasticity of this process and investigate the contribution of mitochondrial glycolate oxidation to photorespiration in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.

i Gene Technology

Photorespiration is a major limitation to crop productivity due to the release of afore fixed carbon and nitrogen and the consumption of energy and reducing equivalents. We develop approaches towards the reduction of photorespiration. The C3-C4 project aims to concentrate CO2 in the chloroplast by similar means as observed in C4 plants. In the Photorespiratory Bypass project we instead installed a bacterial pathway for the metabolism of glycolate in the chloroplast. This genetic modification resulted in a strong enhancement of photosynthesis and biomass productivity in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.

i Chromatin

Chromatin contributes to the regulation of transcription in eukaryotes. We are mainly interested in covalent histone modifications associated with transcriptional activation in plants. Our model system is the integration of developmental and environmental signals on photosynthetic genes in maize. Furthermore, we study the priming of pathogenesis-related genes in Arabidopsis.

i Maize Mutants

The establishment and maintenance of the C4 syndrome in maize is poorly understood. We identified and characerized a mutant line that lost C4 photosynthesis without affecting C4-specific gene expression. Moreover, we analyse knock-out lines and overexpressing lines for maize DOF transcription factors that have been suggested to regulate C4 gene expression.

i White Biotechnology

As part of the integrative project "BioSysPro", we aim to develop methods for the production of phenylpropanoids as precursors for chemcial synthesis in prokaryotes and plant cell cultures.
